The spinning flame-hardening method is an ideal way to harden a steel or cast iron crane wheel.   See how it’s done with this video:

The crane wheel in this video is 1045 steel and 15” (380 mm) in diameter.   The floor to floor cycle time is approximately (12) minutes.

The flame head design is critical.   Heat needs do be directed into the corners yet balanced in such a way as to not allow the heat to soak through the flange.   If the flange were to heat through, it would cause hardness through the flange making it brittle.
